Can One of You Ask First? Pair Hotel Manager Consultation Alone, Even Without a Partner Yet

Hearing "a job for two people", you may feel you cannot move until your partner is decided. In practice, people who check the terms alone first and then talk to a partner have a smoother conversation. This article covers how to consult alone and how to prepare before you explain it to someone else.

Important for non-Japanese readers. Your eligibility to work in Japan depends on your residence status (visa), not on your Japanese level. This position does not grant or guarantee a visa. Eligibility is checked individually and free of charge before you apply. Japanese around JLPT N2 is the guideline for daily operations. Taxes and insurance for contractors should be confirmed with a tax professional.

Key points

Why it is fine to consult alone

Pair hotel managers apply as a team of two. But you do not need both people present for the first consultation. There are three reasons.

One note on the word "contract". A pair hotel manager works under a management contract with the hotel operator, similar to an independent contractor, not as an employee. The contract fee for the pair is ¥11.5 million or more in the first year (excluding tax). From the second year through the sixth year, the annual contract fee is ¥12 million plus a performance bonus. There is no startup cost, no franchise fee, no deposit and no training fee. The pair lives on site in a 1LDK apartment inside the hotel, with rent and utilities at ¥0. The contract runs for one year and is renewable.

How to choose on the application form

At the top of the application form there is a field where you select your current situation.

OptionWhat you must enterWhat you can leave out
We are considering applying as a pairName, age and nationality for both people
I have a partner, but I want to hear the details alone firstYour own details and your relationship to the partnerPartner's name, age and nationality (optional)
My partner is not decided yetYour own details onlyEvery field about the partner

If you choose the second or third option, the partner's name, age, nationality and residence status are not required. You can book with just your own contact details and a preferred date and time.

What happens when you consult alone

1. Free consultation (20-30 minutes, by phone or Zoom)

A recruitment support staff member explains the work, the contract fee, the housing and the selection process. It is fine to say where you stand right now, for example that your partner is not decided or that you are still unsure. Nobody will push you to apply on the spot.

2. Receive the terms in a form you can show your partner

After the consultation you receive the recruitment terms in a format you can show to someone else. Even if you feel you cannot explain it well in your own words, simply laying out the terms side by side makes the conversation easier.

3. Talk it through with your partner

Go through the following points together. If you apply while these are still out of sync, you will run into trouble during selection or after you start.

4. Information session and selection interview as a pair

Once both of you are ready, you move on to the operator's information session and selection interview. After that comes 50 days of training, and then you start at your hotel. From the first consultation, the earliest start is about three months later.

If your partner is not decided yet

Quite a few people book the consultation with "partner not decided". Knowing the terms at this stage makes the following clearer.

Consulting does not put you on a clock. Nobody will rush you to apply before you have found a partner.

If only one of you is keen

A common case is "I am interested, but my partner is cautious". Rather than trying to persuade them, it works better to go through their worries one by one against the actual terms: income stability, relocating, and what happens if they want to stop. The one-year renewable contract, the zero startup cost, and rent and utilities at ¥0 are exactly the conditions a cautious partner tends to care about most. Be honest at the same time: the work is demanding, the pair lives where they work, and it is not the right fit for everyone. As material for the discussion, you can also use the estimate of how much a pair can save in four years and a manager's typical day.

Things worth asking when you consult alone

On the last point: the site does not arrange or promise any visa. Whether you can take this work depends on your current residence status, and it is checked individually and free of charge before you apply. Japanese ability (around JLPT N2 as a guideline) and work eligibility are two separate questions, so ask about both. All nationalities are welcome to consult.

These are the questions your partner will almost certainly ask you. If you ask them alone first, you will have the answers when the two of you talk.

FAQ

Can I book a consultation even though my partner is not decided?

Yes. Choose "my partner is not decided yet" on the application form and every field about the partner becomes unnecessary. You can book the free 20-30 minute consultation with just your own contact details and a preferred date and time.

Can I hear the details on my own first, without telling my partner?

That is fine. If you choose "I have a partner, but I want to hear the details alone first", the partner's name, age and nationality become optional. After the consultation you receive the terms in a form you can show your partner.

How long does it take from consulting alone to actually applying?

The time you spend talking with your partner is up to you. Once both of you are ready, you go through the information session and selection interview, then 50 days of training, and then start at your hotel. The earliest is about three months. Nobody will rush you to apply before you have found a partner.

Ask everything you are unsure about before you apply.

Days off, night duty, training, visa pre-check, and what comes after the contract — a support adviser explains it all.
No pressure to apply.

Book a free consultation (alone is fine) You can simply receive an explanation to share with your future partner.
